Changes to Canadian Poetry usage statistics

The User Statistics home-page now includes a number of options that allow you to customise the way the statistics are presented.

Show statistics for date range - this allows you to select a date range over which to view your statistics. By default, the controls are set to display statistics for the last month during which you have used Canadian Poetry.

You can alter the start date or end date to display a different time period, but a very large date range will take some time to display.

Show summary of type - Choose 'daily' to see a breakdown by day, or 'monthly' to see a breakdown by month. The monthly view will display more quickly than the daily view if you have selected a large date range.

Format - Select "user-friendly" to go to an easy-to-read view. If you are viewing the statistics for more than one database, this view will include clickable expand/contract symbols on the left-hand side of the screen, which allow you to show or hide database-specific information. If you want to import the statistics into a spreadsheet, click "For spreadsheet import". This will display the statistics as a pipe-separated list. To import this list into a spreadsheet programme, select the list and copy it, then paste it into a word-processor. Save the list as a text file. You should now be able to import the saved file into a spreadsheet program.

Include break-down by time of day - tick this box if you want the statistics to be broken down by time interval. If you don't need this level of detail, the statistics are usually clearer and easier to understand if you leave this box unticked.

  • When you have changed the controls according to your preference, click "show statistics" to go through to the actual statistics display. After a short pause, the statistics appear under several columns.

Understanding user statistics

Our usage statistics are modelled as closely as possible on the requirements for web statistics produced by the International Coalition of Library Consortia (ICOLC). Some changes were necessary because of the nature of the Individual Literature Collections database, however, we have kept to the spirit of the ICOLC requirements.

Time of day: All statistics are broken down by date and then by four time segments. Current statistics are recorded on a daily basis; archived statistics represent a month of usage divided up by time of day.

Sessions: A usage session begins when a new user starts to use the Individual Literature Collections interface, and ends when the browser they are using is closed. It is possible for a single 'session' to conceal several separate users.

Searches: A search is intended to represent a unique inquiry from a user. A search is recorded each time a search form is submitted to the Individual Literature Collections server - as such, this figure will also include refined searches, and searches resubmitted from the Search History facility. Usage of the Browse facility does not constitute a search.

Hits: The number of hits returned by user searches. A very broad search could return thousands of hits; while a very narrow, directed search could return as few as one.

Searches returning no hits: Searches may be unsuccessful for a number of reasons. It may be that the user may have misunderstood the nature or contents of Individual Literature Collections or may have executed their search badly. Alternatively it may be that the Individual Literature Collections database does not contain what a user is looking for.

Full texts accessed: This figure represents full downloads of an e-text from the Individual Literature Collections database. Partial downloads are not recorded.

Full records accessed: This figure represents the number of full bibliographic records accessed by users using the Secondary Sources part of Individual Literature Collections.

Users denied access: Users are denied access to Individual Literature Collections when your institution's allocated number of simultaneous users has been reached.
