How to cite texts from Chadwyck-Healey Literature Collections

1. How to find the bibliographic details.

There are a number of ways of retrieving the bibliographic details of a work from a Chadwyck-Healey Literature Collection:

  • from the a List of Results, you can check boxes for the texts which you wish to add to your Marked List; then, you can go to the Marked List page to save, print or email these records. You can either email them in plain text, or in a format compatible with the reference manager software packages EndNote, ProCite, Reference Manager or RefWorks.
  • from a full text page, you can click on the 'Download citation' link; this will take you directly to a download page where you can email the citation, either in text format or in a reference manager format.
  • if you download an entire volume from the Complete Contents page, you will find the Bibliographic Details at the top of the full text, which you can copy and paste into a Word document or email. This can also be accessed via the Table of Contents for each volume.

2. Citation formats.

All primary works included in the Chadwyck-Healey Literature Collections were originally published in print form before being reproduced in electronic versions; in these cases, it is important to remember to give the publication details of both the original print source and the electronic version. For the author biographies that are included in certain collections, you should give as much information as is available.

Conventions vary for citing works from electronic subscription services, but most style guides stipulate a combination of the following details: the service's name, the electronic publisher, the library (or other subscribing institution), the date of access, and the URL of the service's home page.

Listed below are recommended citation formats for a poem, a prose work and an author biography from Chadwyck-Healey Literature Collections, in four of the most commonly used citation styles. Note that the biography in this case has no author or date of publication. These are included for guidance purposes only; users are advised to consult the published style guides listed at the foot of the page.

These are examples of citations in a bibliography or list of works cited. Citations in a footnote or endnote may need to be slightly different; guidance on citations in notes varies for each style, with some guides (such as the APA and MLA) stipulating that full citations should only be given in a list of works cited, not in footnotes.

For primary texts, you may need to give page numbers as part of your citation. Please note that page numbers given within the full text appear immediately before the text to which they refer.
