About Chadwyck-Healey

The name Chadwyck-Healey has been synonymous with innovation in electronic publishing since the release of the English Poetry Full-Text Database in 1992. Today, Chadwyck-Healey is the specialist humanities publishing imprint of ProQuest, and continues to be associated with a growing portfolio of electronic publications known and used the world over.

Many of the aims, assumptions and methods that informed development of the earliest Chadwyck-Healey literature collections and made them unique continue to underpin the creation and development of new resources:

  • Every collection published under the Chadwyck-Healey imprint is created according to consistent editorial and production methodologies and faithfully represents the printed sources from which it is transcribed, without silent emendation.
  • Every poem, play or prose work is keyed from an authoritative source selected in accordance with stated principles and in collaboration with editorial advisors. Each is repeatedly validated against the printed original.
  • Chadwyck-Healey literature collections provide reliable, verifiable and consistent indexing of content that enhances searching, is intuitive to use and is an aid to - rather than a substitute for - study, analysis and innovative research.
  • Every Chadwyck-Healey collection is developed and maintained by a dedicated in-house team of editors, software engineers, web design experts and other production staff collaborating closely at every stage of the development cycle. All are committed to developing products that serve the broadest possible range of users and deliver content in a form that sets the standard for web usability and accessibility in electronic resources for the humanities.
  • Chadwyck-Healey literature collections are created in partnership with the library community and are conceived as a means of both broadening access to rare texts and protecting fragile print originals from excessive use. The creation of truly comprehensive electronic collections would have been impossible without the active collaboration of the custodians of the world's printed heritage, who continue to provide privileged access to rare and otherwise unobtainable materials for digitisation.
  • Similarly, it has only been possible to become the leading publisher of contemporary writing in electronic form through enduring partnerships with living authors and print publishers, and through a commitment to protecting the copyrights of all of our publishing partners.
  • All Chadwyck-Healey literature collections are subject to a process of continual development and adaptation to ensure that they exploit to the full the opportunities created by new library technologies and learning environments.
  • All Chadwyck-Healey literature collections have evolved and developed in response to feedback from end-users, librarians and academics, and will continue to do so.

Chadwyck-Healey literature collections offer users the potential to transform the scholarly discussion of literature and language past and present. Making the works of canonical writers, as well as their lesser-known contemporaries, accessible and available to sophisticated analysis in electronic form allows all users of Chadwyck-Healey collections - from specialist researchers to undergraduate students - to make new connections and serendipitous discoveries, thereby creating fresh avenues for critical debate, scholarly dialogue and linguistic research in the humanities.
