You can search English Poetry Second Edition by the following fields:
From the Search page, you can use the Keyword field to search for any word or phrase contained within a poem. To enter terms into the search box:

When searching in the Keyword field, you can use truncation to retrieve documents containing variations on a term. If you choose to search for more than one term, you can also combine them using Boolean and proximity searching.
Please note that we do not recommend searching on numbers, as although the Search results will report all hits in the database, including those within database tags (where numbers are most likely to be recorded), only hits in the full text can be represented in any meaningful way in the Search results.
From the Search page, you can use the First Line/Title Keyword field to search for any word or phrase contained in the first line or title of a work. To enter terms in the First Line/Title Keyword search box:

When searching in the Poet field, you can use truncation to retrieve poems written by authors with a common or similar name. If you choose to search for more than one poet, you can also combine them using Boolean searching.
From the Search page, you can limit a search to poets of a particular nationality. To restrict your search to a particular nationality, select the required option from the Nationality scrolling list. If you do not specify a nationality English Poetry Second Edition will automatically search on all nationalities.
Note: Windows users can multi-select contiguous terms using SHIFT+CLICK and non-contiguous terms using CTRL+CLICK. Highlighted terms can be deselected by moving the cursor to the relevant term and using CTRL+CLICK.
From the Search page, you can limit a search to a particular literary period.
Each poet in the English Poetry Second Edition database has been assigned one or more of a range of pre-determined literary periods. These chronological periods reflect major developments in literary history from the Anglo-Saxon period through to the era of Modernism.
Each of the periods covers a defined date span. Poets have only been assigned those periods during which they were producing their major works.
To restrict your search to a particular period, select the required option from the Period scrolling list. If you do not specify a period English Poetry Second Edition will automatically search on all periods.
Note: Windows users can multi-select contiguous terms using SHIFT+CLICK and non-contiguous terms using CTRL+CLICK. Highlighted terms can be deselected by moving the cursor to the relevant term and using CTRL+CLICK.
From the Search page, you can limit a search to male or female poets. To restrict your search to a particular gender, select the required option from the Gender drop-down list. If you do not specify a gender English Poetry Second Edition will automatically search on both.
You can limit your search to particular elements of the data contained in English Poetry Second Edition by selecting items from the Search Options drop-down lists. For example, you might wish to search for a certain word only when it appears in the main text of rhymed poems, excluding the contents of notes from your search.
The options selected by default are All Poems and Including Notes.
