The Bible in English: Synchronisation

You can compare versions of the Bible by synchronising them to the same point. To do this, first open the Full Text of the version in which you are principally interested and make sure it is displaying the section you wish to compare. Then click the verse number or letter at the exact point at which you wish to synchronise.

A separate window will be opened containing a box listing all versions of the Bible in the database. Select the version you wish to synchronise, and click the Synchronise button.

The window containing the list will close and a new window will open containing the new version, synchronised either exactly or as nearly as possible to the verse number selected in the first version. The point at which synchronisation was established is marked with the icon Synchronisation Point icon. The page will open scrolled to this icon.

You can only synchronise one version at a time. You can, however, synchronise versions successively by returning to the main browser window and repeating the steps above, selecting a different version from the list each time. You can open any number of the 21 versions of the Bible this way.

Note: As the structure of a number of texts varies, synchronisation is not always possible at verse level. In such cases, synchronisation will occur at chapter or book level. If synchronisation was not possible at book level, a message will appear telling you that the version could not be synchronised.

Synchronisation requires a JavaScript-enabled browser to run, and is optimised for Netscape Navigator version 3.0 or higher and Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.0 or higher.

Synchronised Full Text windows

By default, synchronised Full Text is downloaded a chapter at a time. If synchronisation is established at book but not at verse or chapter level, then the whole book will be downloaded.

The synchronised Full Text windows differ from the main Full Text browser window in the following ways:

You can access a Text Only version of synchronised Full Text.

A header is displayed in bold at the top of each synchronised Full Text page giving the title of the current item and the context of the item in the database. This is followed by the main body of the text of the section which you have downloaded. The same standard display formats have been used as in the main Full Text page, except that verse numbers do not act as hyperlinks, and the positions of notes, tables and cross-references are indicated by text in square brackets (e.g. '[Note]') rather than by icons.

To print synchronised Full Text pages, first make sure the relevant window is active, then use your browser's set key combination (for example, Netscape Navigator users should press CTRL+P).
