Twentieth-Century English Poetry: Search Fields

You can search Twentieth-Century English Poetry by the following fields:

Keyword

From the Search page, you can use the Keyword field to search for any word or phrase contained within a poem. To enter terms into the search box:

For example:
Keyword: momentarily
Keyword: own heart

When searching in the Keyword field, you can use truncation to retrieve documents containing variations on a term. If you choose to search for more than one term, you can also combine them using Boolean and proximity searching.

Please note that we do not recommend searching on numbers, as although the Summary of results in context will report all hits in the database, including those within database tags (where numbers are most likely to be recorded), only hits in the full text can be represented in any meaningful way in the Summary of results in context.

First Line/Title Keyword

From the Search page, you can use the First Line/Title Keyword field to search for any word or phrase contained in the first line or title of a work. To enter terms in the First Line/Title Keyword search box:

For example:
First Line/Title Keyword: April

When searching in the First Line/Title Keyword field, you can use truncation to retrieve documents containing variations on a term. If you choose to search for more than one term, you can also combine them using Boolean and proximity searching.

Poet

From the Search page, you can limit a search to a particular poet or poets. To enter terms in the Poet search box:

For example:
First Line/Title Keyword: April

When searching in the Poet field, you can use truncation to retrieve poems written by authors with a common or similar name. If you choose to search for more than one poet, you can also combine them using Boolean searching.

Publisher

From the Search page, you can limit a search to a particular publisher or publishers. To enter terms in the Publisher search box:

For example:
First Line/Title Keyword: April

When searching in the Publisher field, you can use truncation to retrieve poems published by publishers with a similar name. If you choose to search for more than one publisher, you can also combine them using Boolean searching.

Gender

From the Search page, you can limit a search to male or female poets. To restrict your search to a particular gender, select the required option from the Gender drop-down list. If you do not specify a gender Twentieth-Century English Poetry will automatically search on both.

Note: Windows users can multi-select contiguous terms using SHIFT+CLICK and non-contiguous terms using CTRL+CLICK. Highlighted terms can be deselected by moving the cursor to the relevant term and using CTRL+CLICK.

Date of First Publication

You can limit a search to poems first published in a particular year or during a range of years. The default values appearing in the search boxes represent the earliest and most recent years relevant to the Twentieth-Century English Poetry database.

The Date of Publication field can be searched in several different ways:

  • To search on a range of years, enter the relevant values into the From and to search boxes.

    For example:
Date of First Publication: From 1925 to 1999

  • To search on one particular year, enter the same value into both of the search boxes.

    For example:
Date of First Publication: From 1965 to 1965

  • To search on a given year and all subsequent years, enter the first date in the range into the From search box.

    For example:
Date of First Publication: From 1965 to 1999

  • To search on a given year and all preceding years, enter the later date in the range into the to search box.

    For example:
Date of First Publication: From 1925 to 1965

Note: Date of First Publication refers to the date of first publication of the volume in which a poem appears, or date of first publication of the poem for volumes published by Faber and Faber, or first publication of the poem in print for all W.B. Yeats' poetry.
